New Orleans Buzz |
New Orleans Information New Orleans can be a deceptive place. It seems bigger than it is. For one thing, there are only about 500,000 residents here, yet it seems that there are at least that many people on Bourbon Street alone and that is not on Fat Tuesday! For another, there are more women than there are men - the population is about 53 percent female and 47 percent male. This city just seems like there are more pretty women per square block than any other town. Many people think of New Orleans as a party town, and in some ways, it is. However, fully 60 percent of the households in the city are families and most of those are traditional. You know, mom, dad, 2.3 kids. Therefore, if all those people are out partying as much as some people think then there is probably a good living to be had in being a babysitter. Forty-three percent of the folks here are between the ages of 25 and 54, so there may be many fancy-free young adults but there are also many settled-down middle-aged ones, too. Actually, the median age is 33, which is sort of on the old side of young and the young side of middle aged.
Ethnicity is very mixed in New Orleans and has been since day one when both the French and the Spanish laid claim to significant portions of the city. Since then, the influence of everyone from African slaves to Vietnamese chefs has contributed to a polyglot of heritage. Today there are measurable populations of Caucasians, African Americans, Asian (including Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Filipino), Hispanic (Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban), and a good-sized population who can claim more than one ethnic heritage.Another deceptive aspect of New Orleans is it sometimes gives the impression of being a city where everyone comes and goes depending on their mood. Actually, the residential population is steady. Half the housing units in the city are owned by the people who live in them, which is a good indication that they feel like they belong here and plan to stay. Therefore, whether you are planning to visit New Orleans or think you might want to live there, be prepared for surprises in what you find. After all, New Orleans is not what she seems. In fact, she is a whole lot better.
